Scope and Contents
The President Joseph K. Nicholes collection documents the busy life of Nicholes as he was the president of Dixie Normal College and Dixie Junior College, with responsibilities to the LDS Church Department of Education, while also the President of the St. George Stake of Zion, an ecclesiastical subdivision the LDS Church. The material collected is from 1916-1951. The bulk of the material created is from 1920-1923 and 1927-1930.
The Church Papers Series contains church leadership papers, church reports, and papers regarding midwifery and Mormon women physicians. They are dated from 1926-1931 and are arranged in chronological order by the date they were written or received.
The Correspondence Series contains many personal, educational, and Church-related papers including various correspondence between the college and local school officials, as well as with the college and its superiors in the L.D.S Church education system. There is also a mixture of papers in regards to school business with that of the Church, the latter involving Nicholes as president of the St. George Stake. They are dated from 1920-1951 and are arranged in chronological order by the date they were written or received.
The Dixie College Papers Series contains papers regarding: accreditation, agriculture, building and construction, circular letters, college transfer, curriculum, faculty agreements, faculty leadership training, faculty surveys, financial records; bank account statements and checks, bank deposit record book, budget, expense book, invoices and purchases, Founders Day speeches, school classes and attendance, school forms, school registrar, school year overview and valedictory address. They are dated from 1916-1932 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic.
The Newspaper Articles Series contains news clippings that are in regards to the local agriculture and cattle industry. Also included, are church related news clippings including one from Heber J. Grant, President of the LDS Church at that time. They are dated from 1921-1922 and are arranged in chronological order by the date they were written.
The Photograph Series contains an original professional photograph of President Nicholes as well as photocopy of John T. Woodbury and Edward H. Snow. There are ninety-one glass lantern slides included in the Photograph Series in which 75% of the photographs are of students and faculty and 25% are of Zions and Bryce Canyon National Park. They are dated from 1936-1937 and undated. They are arranged in groups according to topic.
The Programs and Pamphlets Series contains various school and church programs and pamphlets. They are dated from 1920-1937 and are arranged in chronological order.
The Reports Series contains a potash report, president’s annual report and teacher training report. They are dated 1921-1933 and are arranged in chronological order.

The collection is open and freely available to researchers during Special Collections hours or by appointment. Researchers must complete an Application for Use and show a photo ID prior to accessing materials.
