Dixie Normal College & Dixie Junior College student body officers collection is arranged in one series. Student Body Officers Meeting Minutes Series contains three original notebooks documenting the student body meetings held at the Dixie Normal College & Dixie Junior College of the years 1918-1927 in St. George, Utah. They are arranged in chronological order. The three books are listed as follows: 1. Dixie Normal College student body meeting minutes, Jan. 1918 – April 1918, contains student body meeting minutes under the direction of the Student Body Commission. 2. Dixie Normal College student body meeting minutes, Oct. 1919 – Jan. 1923, contains student body meeting minutes under the direction of the student body presidents: Frank Crosby 1919, Chief Com. Henry Miles 1920, Walter Smith 1921, and Cyril Bastian 1922. 3. Dixie Normal College & Dixie Junior College student body meeting minutes, Jan. 1922 – April 1927, contains student body meeting minutes under the direction of the Student Body Presidents: Cyril Bastian 1922, Karl N. Snow 1923, Wayne C. Gardner 1924, Newell R. Frei 1925, and Wendell Robinson 1926.

The Student Body meeting minutes in each book document the names of the student body president, student body officers and their responsibilities working together to help the students succeed in their studies while attending college. The student body meeting minutes document: student body affairs, school activities, social service pins, D-pins, track team pins and sweaters, basketball team sweaters and uniforms, basketball game uniforms and admittance fees, and out of town school visits. Also documented are the student problems; intoxication, tobacco, smoking, gambling, tardiness, absences and the fines and consequence that follow. The legitimacy of the excuses were to be decided by the student body. The student newspaper publication “The Dixie Owl” was discussed each year from 1918-1922 regarding the cover, circulation and subscription price, number of editions to print, and whether to change the publication from newspaper to magazine, and whether to send a copy to the soldiers and Stake Board of Education. The student newspaper publication “Dixie News” was discussed each year from 1923-1927 regarding the circulation and subscription price, number of editions to print, and decision to send a copy to the advertising patrons.

Biographical / Historical

Dixie State University was established in 1911 as St. George Stake Academy with the original campus on the northwest corner of Main Street and 100 South in Saint George, Utah. The first graduating class of St. George Stake Academy was in 1913 and it had 13 students. The original building for the campus remains, and is currently the St. George Children’s Museum. The name for the institution changed two years after its creation to Dixie Academy in 1913 and kept this name until 1916. The name changed again to Dixie Normal College from 1916-1923. The name changed to Dixie Junior College from 1923-1972. In 1963, the campus moved to its current location at 225 South 700 East in Saint George. At the time of the move, the campus was on the edge of town. Dixie College was the name from 1972-2000 and then became Dixie State College of Utah from 2000-2013. In 2013, the name changed to Dixie State University and currently retains that moniker. The population of St. George was 1769 in 1910 and 2271 in 1920. In 1990, 28,502 was the population in St. George. In 2010, the population was 72,897. In 2014, 1630 students graduated with bachelors and associates degrees. Currently in 2020, the population in St. George is 87,178, and Dixie State University has approximately 12,000 students and is a fast-growing Utah public institution of higher education offering over 210 programs, including masters, bachelors, associates, certificates, and endorsements.
