Biographical / Historical

The Upward Bound program was established at Dixie College in 1983 by Mr. Swan, director of Upward Bound. It is a federally funded program for a limited number of high school students who have the recognized potential of becoming college graduates. Because they have not had any previous family members that have graduated from college, prospects of that individual attending college are minimal. That person can, then, be accepted into the Upward Bound program.

Dixie College’s goal is to ensure that students in Upward Bound receive necessary skills to succeed in college. Students can actually earn college credit, become better acquainted with college life, receive insight on career selection, and get an opportunity to mingle with students from other schools. Students that attend the Dixie College Rebounder-Upward Bound Program are from High Schools in the area including: Pine View, Dixie, Enterprise, Hurricane, Virgin Valley, Kanab, and Freedonia High Schools. Seniors who were selected show good potential, and their teachers identify them as being capable. Students chosen are those who generally would not go to college.

Each summer students come to Dixie College for a six-week program on campus, which consists of 12-15 credits plus work four hours daily. At the end of three high school years, a student may have 45 hours, or a full year of college completed. A graduating Upward Bound student will return more than it cost to put him through the program by paying back to the Federal government a difference in taxes 39 times that he would have, only graduating from high school. The program is regarded with respect and admiration because of the direct and positive way it goes affecting the lives of many in a positive way.
