President Mathew M. Bentley collection
Scope and Contents
This collection documents the pamphlets published during President Mathew M. Bentley’s time as interim president at Dixie Junior College in St. George, Utah. The pamphlets were previously housed with President Joseph K. Nicholes’ Collection. The material created is from 1950-1951.
The Pamphlets Series contains a “Dixie Spirit” songbook that consists of 16 pages of Dixie College songs in a small pamphlet. It also contains “Cholla,” a 26-page pamphlet, then called magazine, published by the Dixie College English Department. It is a collection of the student’s art, short stories and poetry. They are arranged in chronological order.

Biographical / Historical
Mathew M. Bentley was born on April 12, 1896, in St. George, Utah to William Oscar and Mary Ann Mansfield Bentley. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a three-year mission to the Central States. Bentley married Iris Stowell June 11, 1925 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they had one son and five daughters.
Bentley graduated from Dixie College and Brigham Young University. He did post graduate work at Northwestern University in Illinois. Bentley served in World War l and was a commander of Lester Keate Post No. 90 American Legion. He joined the Dixie College faculty where he served in various positions; professor of accounting, treasurer, and registrar for 35 years. He was a member of the Dixie Educational Association. Bentley served as acting president at Dixie College from 1950-1951. He continued to teach at Dixie College until he retired in 1961.
He was active in civic organizations where he was a member of the board of directors of the Pickett Lumber Company and vice president of the St. George Savings and Loan Company. Bentley was a member of the St. George Utility Commission for 30 years and a St. George City councilman for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and Rotary Club.
Bentley passed away from a heart ailment on September 25, 1970, in St. George, at the age of 74.
