Scope and Contents

This collection documents the numerous files that President Alton L. Wade kept during his presidency at Dixie College [Utah Tech University]. The material created is from 1976-1987, with the bulk of the material from 1980-1986. It contains twelve series.

The Awards Series contains honorary degree recipients, outstanding student awards, professor emeritus, recognition and distinguished service awards. They are dated from 1980-1985 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Commencement Series contains commencement planning, prospective speakers for commencement, commencement speeches, valedictorian letters and invitations. They are dated from 1980-1986 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Correspondence Series contains President Wade’s correspondence, congratulatory letters, invitations, wedding invitations and responses, letters of recommendation, memorandums, mothers of college students, sympathy letters and welcome letters to the students from the president. They are dated from 1980-1986 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Events Series contains papers and programs regarding the numerous college related events including: Dixie Career Day, D-Week, Founder’s Day and Homecoming. They are dated from 1980-1986 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Higher Education General Information (HEGIS) Series contains papers regarding degrees and formal awards, fall enrollment and compliance reports, financial statistics, libraries, residence and migration of college students, salaries, tenure and fringe benefits of full-time instructional faculty. They are dated from 1980-1984 and are arranged in alphabetical order.

The News clippings Series contains news clippings, original and photocopies, that were collected as they related to Dixie College; classes, commencement, events, faculty and staff. Also included are the local Spectrum newspaper articles “Dixie Insights” that were written by President Wade. The articles highlight the athletics, classes, special programs, events, and celebrations at the college. They are dated from 1980-1986 and are arranged in chronological order.

The Photograph Series contains photographs and negatives of campus, student life, campus buildings, founders of Dixie College, Dixie College presidents, faculty and staff. Hansen Stadium construction photographs are also included. They are dated 1983 and undated. They are arranged in chronological order.

The President Wade-Personal Series contains President Wade’s; correspondence, history, personal papers, appreciation dinner, resume and telephone directories. They are dated from 1976-1986 and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Reports Series contains departmental reports, Dixie College; foundation financial report, instructional service report, productivity and self-study report, Northwest Association evaluation committee report, president’s report, Snow College self-study report, State of Utah auditor’s report and Utah Legislative Appropriations report. They are dated from 1979-1984 and are arranged in in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date

The Speeches Series contains President Wade’s Inauguration speech. Also included are President Wade’s numerous speeches and speech material, as well as Vice President Peter Nyberg’s speech. They are dated from 1980-1986 and are arranged in chronological order.

The Subject Files Series is the largest series. It contains Dixie College papers regarding: academic calendar, accreditation, amphitheater (O.C.Tanner) in Zion’s, athletics, biography of Leonard Sproul, Board of Regents, budget, Brigham Young University, building groundbreaking and dedications, Dixie Center, Dixie College; alumni, capital facilities, committees, councils, clubs, Diamond Jubilee, handbook, history, lectures, outdoor mosaic mural history, presidents, publications, and radio station, Dixie Medical Center, Eccles Foundation (George S & Delores Dore’), faculty promotion policies, faculty-staff directory, financials, forensic squad, campus related forms, higher education, inauguration, institutional council, internship program, public relations, registrar, scholarships, seminars, student body presidents, summer school, technology, travel expenses and authorization forms, Utah State Board of Regents and Utah State Legislature. They are dated from 1979-1987 and are arranged in in alphabetical order by topic and chronological order according to the date.

The Utah State Board of Higher Education (USHE) Series contains papers and pamphlets in regards to the analysis of supplemental appropriation requests and recommendations, budget, productivity reports, supplementals, Utah State Board of Regents and university presidents. They are dated from 1980-1985 and are arranged in alphabetical order.

Biographical / Historical

Alton LaVar Wade was born on March 29, 1934 in Leamington, Utah. He is married to Diana Daniels Wade and they are the parents of eight children. Wade attended Millard High School and graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Political Science. He received an M.A. in Political Science from California State College in Long Beach, California. Wade spent one year at the University of California in Los Angeles, California studying Public Administration. He then returned to Brigham Young University to earn an Ed. D. in Educational Administration.

Alton LaVar Wade’s professional experience includes:

1959-1960- Teacher at Long Beach Unified School District in Long Beach, California.

1961-1963- Teacher at Whittier Union High School District in Whittier, California.

1963-1965- Teacher at Church College of New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1965-1967- Vice-Principal at Church College of New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1967-1971- Principal at Church College of New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1971-1972- Assistant to Administrator-Church Schools for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1972-1976- Administrator at Church College of New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1976-1980- Zone Administrator at Church College of New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church Educational System.

1980-1986- President of Dixie College, St. George, Utah.

1986-1994- President at Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

1994-2000- Vice-President of Student Life at Brigham Young University.

2000-2003- President of the Washington DC South Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.



President Wade was known for his magnetic personality, sense of humor, positive attitude, and administrative expertise. He had a vision of the Dixie Center and served as the chairman and executive director on the Dixie Center Administrative Control Board. Wade skillfully moved the concept into a reality with a ground-breaking for the Dixie Center on April 2, 1985. The Center had been called a prototype of similar ventures to become nationwide.

In 1985, Wade became the first president to see a Dixie College athletic team win a national championship. Dixie College’s basketball team became the NJCAA National Basketball Champions after defeating Kankakee College (Illinois) in Hutchinson, Kansas.

During President Wade’s administration, computerization was introduced across campus, the Hansen Football Stadium & Track and Dixie Bell Tennis Courts were built, and enrollment increased from 1790 to 2191.

Abstract

This collection consists of awards, commencement, correspondence, events, Higher Education General Information Surveys (HEGIS), news clippings, photographs, President Wade’s personal, reports, speeches, subject files, and Utah State Board of Higher Education (USHE) collected by President Alton L. Wade during his term as the 13th president of Dixie College [Utah Tech University] (St. George, Utah). The materials date from 1976-1987.
