Scope and Contents
This collection contains a single 10cm x 17.5cm black and white stereograph albumin print on a tan card. The photo depicts David H. Cannon baptising a "Shebit" [Shivwit] Indian man, possibly See-Poor-a-Tum, in a small pond at approximately 425 N Main St. in St. George, Utah while other Shivwit men watch. The photo was taken by C. R. Savage in March 1875. The back of the card has a printed label, "Views of the Great West from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. Taken by C. R. Savage, Salt Lake City, Utah. Utah Series. Baptism of 130 Indians of the Shebit Nation at St. George, by the Mormons."

Biographical / Historical
C. R. Savage was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Southampton, England, and a prolific photographer of the American West. He photographed Ute, Paiute, Shoshone, and Hopi, as well as studio work for customers. His photographs often highlighted his perceived differences between white (Latter-day Saints) and Native Americans.
