Biographical / Historical
Delta Psi Omega is a national honorary dramatic fraternity among two-year colleges to provide recognition and stimulate interest in dramatics, speech, and debate. Students are invited to join after they have done a specific amount of work in major school productions, such as performing or working behind the scenes. The theatrical group creates scenery, props, and participates in school sponsored plays. Although drama clubs can be found in Dixie yearbooks dating back to 1913, Delta Psi Omega was not officially organized until the spring of 1938, when it was sponsored by Delta Psi Omega’s sister society, Alpha Psi Omega.
Myrtle Henderson began advising as Grand Director in 1941 with B. Glen Smith and Pauline Fuller as honorary members. Andrew Karl Larson began advising a few years after Henderson in 1944. In 1951, Juanita Brooks was an honorary member with Henderson advising. In 1955, Marion Bentley was Assistant Grand Director and one year later was Grand Director along with Henderson. In 1957, Arthur Butler began advising as Grand Director. In 1960, Bentley is the only Grand Director and continued until 1967. In 1975, Dr. C. Paul Andersen also advised with Olive Esplin around 1983. Both Andersen and Esplin advised along with Brent Hansen who started advising in 1984, the three advised for multiple years together up until the mid-90’s. Delta Psi Omega dissolved by 2000 when Dixie became a four year institution.
