Dixie State University yearbooks
Scope and Contents
This collection contains two series. The printed yearbooks of Dixie State University from 1913-2000 and the 2001 video yearbook comprise the first series. The second series contains the advertisements and contracts that went into printing the yearbooks between 1983 and 1995.
The published yearbooks evolved along with the school. The first yearbooks are small, but often contain quotes from individual students and faculty. Since the student body was very small when Dixie Academy first started, the student body collectively prepared the first several yearbooks. The later years focus more on groups and events, as not all students were photographed for the yearbooks. These yearbooks cover 1913 to 2001 with a few years missing that were published as a paper commencement issue.
In the years 1917-1938, the yearbooks alternated between hardback and paper commencement publication possibly as a cost savings during the depression. The 1926 and 1930 yearbooks are published as a hardback and paper issue. The paper editions titled "Dixie Owl Commencement" include the years 1917 and 1922. The paper editions titled "Dixie News Commencement" include the years 1922, 1926, 1927, 1930, 1931, 1934, 1936 and 1937. They are published as The Dixie Owl Commencement and The Dixie News Commencement and took place of the yearbooks. They are currently stored in the Dixie Owl Collection and Dixie News Collection. They are cross listed for ease of access.
In general the yearbooks cover the history and growth of the school from its beginnings as the Dixie Stake Academy to its evolution as the Dixie State College of Utah. The students, clubs, events, sports teams, and sports clubs are represented in the yearbooks.
The high school and college shared the same yearbook until 1964 when the two schools began printing separate yearbooks.
The second series in the collection contains advertising and printing contracts for 1983 to 1995.

Biographical / Historical
Dixie State University was established in 1911 as St. George Stake Academy with the original campus on the northwest corner of Main Street and 100 South in Saint George, Utah. The original building for the campus remains, and is currently the St. George Children’s Museum. The name for the institution changed two years after its creation to Dixie Academy in 1913 and kept this name until 1916. Members of the first several classes’ student body prepared the yearbooks together since their numbers were so small. As the student body grew, a committee was assigned and then a class was instituted to prepare the yearbook. The school’s name changed again to Dixie Normal College during 1916-1923. 1923-1972 the name changed to Dixie Junior College. Dixie College was the name from 1972-2000. Enthusiasm for the yearbooks steadily decreased and it was difficult to get a majority of the students photographed once the student body became too large, so the last print yearbook was published for the school year 1999-2000 with a video yearbook prepared for the class of 2000-2001 (“Dixie yearbook withers away.” Deseret News, 20 Feb. 2001). The school’s name changed again to Dixie State College of Utah from 2000-2013, and then changed to Dixie State University.
