Civilian Conservation Corps collection

 Collection
Identifier: WASH-022

Scope and Contents

The Civilian Conservation Corps collection is comprised of two separate donations and an issue of "Voice of Veyo" taken from the archives' former vertical files. The first donation includes two 11 inch X 16 inch black and white photographs in four parts. Each part is 8 ½ inches X 11 inches printed on photographic paper. The first photograph is a large group photo of Company 961 CCC in 1934. The second is a photo of the buildings erected for Company 961 CCC.

The second donation to the collection includes two large (9 inches in diameter) copies of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) logo (one in color, the other in black and white). Two copies of an issue of the “handmade” publication entitled “Midget Tribune” contain information about the men and projects of Company 585 Leeds, Utah. The July 1939 issue is also part of the collection. Two songs ("Our Alma Mater" and "S-H-O-V-E-L") are included on a single sheet of paper. The final item in this donation is a printed bound keepsake style book similar to a yearbook having belonged to Eugene Gross.

Biographical/Historical note

Philip Hepworth enrolled in the CCC in the summer of 1935 and joined the Panquitch Lake Camp at the age of 19. He remained until the end of 1936, about 18 months, at which time his term expired (each term was limited to 12-18 months). Philip re-enrolled in 1940 for a few months prior to his 24th birthday which was the age limit for participation. The Utah Tech University Oral History Collection also contains an interview transcription (#2004-024) in which Philip Hepworth recounts some of his time in the CCC.

Michael Empey grew up in St. George, Utah, moved away, and later returned in the mid-1990s to become Mayor of Leeds.
