Peter Van Valkenburg collection
Scope and Contents
The Peter Van Valkenburg Collection documents the travels and teaching materials of Peter Van Valkenburg. In general, the images in the collection reflect Van Valkenburg’s role as a geology professor at Dixie State University [Utah Tech] from 1984 to 2017. The bulk of the collection is composed of color 35mm slides, with a few print photographs, and occasional negatives. Many of the images are of geological features in Southern Utah, the Southwest, and the United States. Additionally, there is a small but valuable set of historic images of Utah Tech University campus buildings.

Biographical / Historical
Peter Van Valkenburg was born May 19, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended Brigham Young University between 1969 and 1972 and while there, he played on the university’s football team as a running back for three years. At BYU his number was #28 and he was voted All-American in 1972 and was awarded the NCAA rushing title in 1972. In 1973, the New Orleans Saints drafted Van Valkenburg into the National Football League (NFL). In his football career, Van Valkenburg played for the Buffalo Bills in 1973, Green Bay Packers in 1974, and the Chicago Bears in 1974. He finished his career in 1975 playing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Van Valkenburg finished his Bachelor’s degree in earth science in 1984 from BYU. In 1988, Van Valkenburg received a Master’s in Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences from Northern Arizona University. In June 1984, Van Valkenburg began working at Dixie College as a Professor of Geology, where he served as the Chair of the Physical Science Department for a few years. Van Valkenburg retired in 2017 from Dixie State University.

Abstract
This collection consists of color photographs, negatives, and slides from Peter Van Valkenburg. There are historic images of Utah Tech Univeristy campus buildings, and towns and geological sites in Southern Utah.

The collection has maintained its original order and is organized alphabetically by subject and then by date as possible.
