Riley Cooper Savage diaries
Scope and Contents
This collection contains five diaries from Riley Cooper Savage’s mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from November 3, 1895 to November 10, 1898. He served in the Southern States Mission from Wilmington, Delaware to Vicksburg, Mississippi. The five diaries are handwritten in small leather bound record books in sequential order. Savage started a new book when the last one was completely filled. The final item in the collection is the transcription of the diaries compiled into one comb-bound book transcribed by Carol N. Christensen. It is also available as a digital word document.
These diaries cover his daily duties and activities as a LDS missionary including the weather, how far they walked, and where they ate and slept. It also mentions with whom they spoke at each stop.

Biographical / Historical
Riley Cooper Savage was born July 16, 1872 in Toquerville, Utah. He was the second son of a plural marriage between his father, Levi Savage, Jr., and his father's fourth wife, Mary Ann Cooper Savage. Between 1895 and 1898, he served his mission in the Southern States Mission. The diaries show his mission started in Wilmington, Delaware. In the last entry on November 10, 1898, Savage and his companion were in Vicksburg, Mississippi when they were set to return to Salt Lake City, Utah. After his return to Southern Utah in late 1898, Savage gave an address during the St. George Stake Conference and was appointed a home missionary for Harmony, Utah. He would continue to serve as a home missionary for several areas. Savage married Mary Eveline in 1904 and they had five children together. In 1923, Savage built a home in Leeds, Utah. In 1942, Savage was appointed chairman of a sorghum plan subcommittee of the Church stake welfare committee. On May 25, 1954 Savage passed away after an accident and is buried in St. George, Utah.
