Scope and Contents

The New Harmony City Council mintues contain a coverless original handwritten, and a photocopied minute book. It documents the New Harmony City council minutes in New Harmony, Utah from August 19, 1935 to November 26, 1961. Pages 1-54 are complete, and pages 55-76 are blank. The minutes describe water, streets, and power projects undertaken by the council in an attempt to solve problems and develop a pleasant town environment.

Biographical / Historical

The New Harmony, Utah area was settled by Latter-day Saints in 1852. It is surrounded by the peaks of Pine Valley Mountain, Bumblebee Range, and Kolob Canyon; and near Cedar City and St. George. At an elevation of over 5000 feet, it experiences all four seasons. Initially, developed as farm land and orchards, it is now a small but thriving community of locals and commuters. Some of the residents are snowbirds, living in town during the summer because of the cool summer evenings, and taking off for warmer locations in the winter.
