 Collection
Identifier: WASH-060

Scope and Contents

Cleone Davenport obtained the contents of this collection throughout her life. Davenport mainly collected newspaper clippings and occasionally noted the dates on these items. There are a few written diaries of Davenport's ancestors contained in this collection. The collection spans from the 1870s to the late 2010s, with a larger focus on St. George, Utah development beginning in the 1950s. Davenport's collection is centered around St. George with some focus on the Bloomington area, prominent buildings in St. George such as the tabernacle, the temple, and school buildings; as well as obituaries. Most of the newspapers are original, but most of the photographs are reproductions. Negatives pertaining to the U.S. National Guard and Archie Wallis are also included in this collection. Bound volumes of Washington County newspapers from 1910-1960 were included in the original donation but have been removed from the archival collection to the periodical collection. The removed newspapers are in poor condition. They also include bound newspapers from Pioche, Nevada and Silver Reef, Utah from 1896-1897, as well as the Long Advocate and The Regiment.

Abstract

The Cleone Davenport Newspaper collection consists of full newspapers, newspaper clippings, and photographs from the St. George, Utah area collected by Cleone Wallis Davenport. The collection ranges from the 1870s to late 2010s.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into three series. 1. Topical. 2. Portfolio, and 3. Photographs.

The topical series is arranged in alphabetical order by type and includes a subseries for full newspapers which is stored separately on the folder level. The topical series includes both Davenport's original order and an imposed order. Some binders were labeled by topic, such as schools and obituaries. These binders were left in their original order. Other material was gathered and put into topical categories to best of ability.

The portfolio section is arranged chronologically by binders created by Davenport and left in their original order. Therefore, date ranges between binders do overlap between years. The reason behind Davenport's binder organization is unknown.

Photos are arranged alphabetically topically and by format. The photo series includes two subseries for negatives and glass negatives which is intermixed with topics on the folder level.
