Biographical Statement

Thomas Punter Cottam was born in Salt Lake City on September 28, 1857.

The Cottam family moved to St. George in 1862.

As a young man, Cottam was President of his Deacon's Quorum and later a Counselor in his Elders' quorum.

On April 24, 1887, Thomas Cottam was set apart as Bishop of the St. George 4th Ward. When the wards were consolidated, he was made a Counselor to Bishop James Andrus.

In 1901, he was chosen as first counselor to President Edward H. Snow of the St. George Stake, which position he held for many years.

He also served as an assistant to President David H. Cannon of the St. George Temple. When Pres. Cannon died in December of 1924, Thomas Cottam succeeded him as Temple President.

Cottam served as a member of the St. George City Council for eleven years and as Mayor of St. George from January 6, 1900 to January 1904. He also served as Assessor and Collector for Washington County for a number of years.

Cottam was a member of the Utah Legislature from 1905 to 1908.

Pres. Cottam was ordained a Patriarch in 1917 by Apostle James E. Talmage.

Thomas P. Cottam passed away on March 16, 1926. His funeral was held in the St. George Tabernacle on March 18 and he was buried in Plot A_G_147_2_WH of the St. George City Cemetery.
