Biographical/Historical note
Washington County is located in the southwest corner of the state of Utah. The Anasazi Indians inhabited this area from 200 B.C to around 1300 A.D. The Paiute Indians arrived around 1100 to 1200 A.D. and are still present within the county. In 1849, Brigham Young sent Parley P. Pratt and fifty men to explore the Virgin River Basin and to evaluate colonization possibilities. Elder Pratt was impressed and encouraged future settlement. The county was formed on March 3, 1852 and was named for the first President of the United States, George Washington. The first county seat was the settlement of Harmony. The town of Washington became the second seat in 1859. On January 14, 1863, Saint George was designated as the county seat and has remained so ever since.
