Metta E. Nelson papers
Scope and Contents
The papers of Metta E. Nelson contain the photocopied transcript of a fifty-page journal kept by Mrs. Jack Randall and an accompanying photograph album. The journal documents a trip from Price to Cedar City, Utah from July 2 to August 9, 1915. The photograph album contains photographs taken by Jack Randall from July 5 through August 8. As one of the 12 members of the vacation party, Metta Nelson received a copy of the journal transcript and an album of the photographs taken during the trip from Mr. and Mrs. Randall.
The actual journey began in Ferron, and the initial group of seven dwindled to five after a wrong turn to Emery instead of Salina. In Salina, they were to join with a second wagon and two additional travelers. The two groups eventually met and continued south following the same route as what is now U.S. Highway 89 & 89A to the Grand Canyon. Returning north, they visited Zion a second time, taking in all that was possible to view before the roads into much of the canyon were available. They ended their journey as a group, in Cedar City on August 9.
The Randalls and the Twisses, on their way to the Pacific, rode the “mail auto-bus” to Lund where they boarded the “S. Lake Limited” for Modena.
