Series VIII: Survey Maps, 1890 - 1962
Scope and Contents
The Leo Alva Snow papers cover the years 1870 through 1962. These papers consist of a variety of materials including blueprints, maps, notebooks, contracts, land survey records, photographs, and other miscellaneous items. Series I (1902-1908; 1958) contains his school work and notes from college courses. Series II (1905-1962) comprises documentation of contracted work on canal, irrigation, city water systems, and water appropriation. Series III (1870-1962) covers his work while contracted as a civil engineer, building engineer, and county surveyor, as well as his work for the Public Works Association. Series IV (1904-1961) covers the personal and business projects that Snow was active in, including his records of the St. George Garage Company and the Snow & Cannon Insurance Agency. There is also a small file on his family history and his activities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Series V (1903-1937), contains the photographic prints of three photographers: John Moffitt Stewart, Leo A. Snow, and Clarence P. Snow. They document projects that Snow was involved in as well as Clarence's school days. Series VI (1905-1957), contains survey field notes from Southern Utah, Arizona and Nevada. Series VII (undated), contains index books with field notes and maps. Series VIII (1890-1962), contains survey maps of the Southern Utah, Nevada, and Arizona areas. The maps include the Sub-Series: Improvement, Irrigation, Mining, National Forest, Railroad, Schools, States, Territories, Utah Counties/Towns, and Washington County Roads; including land owners personal properties in these areas. The majority of the maps are digitized so that the original maps do not get damaged.
These were transferred to Utah Tech University Special Collections and Archives from the County Recorder Russell Shirts at the request of descendants of Leo Alva Snow. Special Collections and Archives is better equipped to care for the entire collection and having all of the material together in one location will make access easier for researchers.
