Alder, Douglas D.
Biographical Statement
Dr. Douglas D. Alder (1932-) was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he attended public schools and earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Utah. His doctorate in history was awarded by the University of Oregon and included a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Vienna in Austria. He then taught European history for 23 years and directed the honors program at Utah State University. He was the 14th president of Dixie College, serving from 1986 to 1993, after which he returned to teaching history full time. During his presidency, the Val A. Browning Learning Resource Center was completed, as were additions to the Browning Library and the Science Building. The construction on the Udvar-Hazy Business Building was begun, as was the Gardner Student Center. In addition, the College Inn was developed for the Elderhostel Program and the DSC National Advisory Council was established. Dr. Alder served on numerous state boards, including Utah Arts Council, Utah Humanities Council, Utah Historical Society, Mesa Creativity Center, Grafton Heritage Restoration, and the Washington County Historical Society. Since his presidency, he has written southern Utah history and Dixie State College history, and he has served on community boards, including the Washington County Library, Historic St. George LIVE, Celebrity Concert Series, and the St. George Neighborhood Preservation Committee. Dr. Alder teaches history classes for the Elderhostel and ICL programs. He and his wife, Elaine Reiser Alder, are the parents of four children and have 12 grandchildren. Elaine helped in restoring the St. George Opera House and the Pioneer Center for the Arts.

All That Was Promised research papers
The All That Was Promised research papers consist of research files, photographs, correspondence, and drafts by Blaine M. Yorgason, Douglas D. Alder, and Richard A. Schmutz in writing their book All That Was Promised, about the history of the St. George (Utah) Temple. The book was published in 2013.
Cuba Lyle papers
The Cuba Lyle papers comprise historical and personal research, including photocopies of documents and newspaper clippings accompanied by notes; correspondence; photographs; newspaper clippings on the filming; call sheets for filming; a guest book of Hollywood crew and actors; and an assortment of commemorative brochures and programs.
Dixie College and Dixie State College Faculty Honor Lectures
This collection contains four programs for the Faculty Honor Lecture event at Dixie College and Dixie State College, dated 1994-2008. The Faculty Honor Lecture was an event where a series of lecturers spoke about various topics, including the history of Washington County and other significant historical topics in American history.
Dixie College Child Development Lab collection
This collection contains photographs, ephemera, and a paper related to the the Dixie College Child Development Lab (later, the Utah Tech University Preschool Laboratory) from 1967 to 1990.
Research for A History of Washington County: From Isolation to Destination
This collection consists of government and school records, newspapers articles, census data, some interviews and personal stories, images, and photocopies used by Douglas D. Alder and and Karl F. Brooks in writing their book A History of Washington County: From Isolation to Destination. Notes from the two researchers as well as a draft of the book are present as well.
